- Carlou D's debut for World Village (Muzikr, 2010) was very much rooted in the traditional music of his native Senegal, albeit with some glorious pop hooks to entice a wider audience. On the follow up, the aptly titled A New Day, Carlou reaches further towards an international pop audience with a varied and powerful set of songs that demonstrate his evolving compositional talents, and his desire to share his music as widely as he can.
Carlou has surpassed himself on these ten tracks - singing in English, French and Wolof, his glorious voice, surely one of the most distinct in all Africa, has never sounded better. He has penned an instant Afro-pop classic in "Soldier", a vibrant track featuring Eagle Eye Cherry with an instantly memorable singalong chorus. "Mbeggeel" features two more rising stars of African music, Ester Rada and Berita, who bring a sensual groove to this more contemplative track. Other highlights include the funky opener "Begge Sa Rew", the slow burner "I Believe" and the stirring ballad "Yalla Nay Moom".
A New Day, recorded in Dakar and Stockholm, is a highly sophisticated contemporary African pop album that deserves to make a star of its creator. The musicianship from the large cast of players in the mixed European / African band is superb throughout - guitars, keyboards, horns and classical strings merged to stunning effect - and the production quality is superb.
Carlou D will be touring Europe in late spring / summer, and his return to the UK is eagerly awaited, following his 2011 Barbican support slot for Youssou N'Dour, his Emerging Global Voices show at the same venue alongside Danyel Waro and Aurelio, and his 2012 Womad appearance.
