Welcome to harmonia mundi, United Kingdom store
- Bristol-based trumpeter Andy Hague releases his first nationally distributed CD in over a decade. In a set of melodic, rhythmically punchy originals Hague cites compositional influences Horace Silver, Wynton Marsalis, Dave Douglas & Kenny Dorham. With inspired soloing from all concerned, this highly listenable recording should surely gain Hague wider recognition.
Hague’s current quintet line-up is Andy Hague – trumpet/flugelhorn, long-term associates Ben Waghorn – saxes and Jim Blomfield – piano, and younger generation rising stars Will Harris – double bass and Mark Whitlam – drums. On this recording they are augmented on two tracks each by saxophonist Jake McMurchie and vocalist Brigitte Beraha.
The musicians all have growing national reputations. Hague appears on Portishead’s recordings and is well known as a jazz educator, tutoring for summer schools such as Dartington, Music For You and Falmouth-Yamaha. Ben Waghorn can also be heard on recordings with Geoff Eales, Dave Stapleton and Keith Tippett. “Jim Blomfield is the best British pianist you've never heard of and is an absolute marvel” - Independent on Sunday. Guest Jake McMurchie is well known for his work with Get The Blessing, and Brigitte Beraha has just released a new CD with her project Babel Fish.
The Andy Hague Quintet has appeared at jazz festivals such as Brecon and Swanage, and their last national tour received a glowing review in The Independent – “The collective impact of what amounts to a South-West supergroup was close to overpowering.”
